You hit the 4WD button, and nothing happens. Or the 4x4 light on your Honda Foreman starts flashing and the front wheels never pull. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. "Honda Foreman 4WD not working" is one of the most common problems Foreman and Rubicon owners search for, and it usually comes down to one part: the electronic 4WD actuator on the front differential.
This guide covers why it fails, how to tell if the actuator is your problem, and how to fix it so it doesn't happen again.
Quick answer
On most Honda Foreman and Rubicon models, 4WD stops working because the electronic 4WD actuator (the shift motor on the front differential) or its wiring fails. Mud and water get into the motor, sensor or plugs, and the ATV can no longer shift the front diff. You can replace it with another electronic actuator, or swap it for a manual 4WD actuator like the Knight ATV Sure 4, which has no electronics to fail.
What the 4WD actuator does on your Honda
When you press the 2WD/4WD button, your Honda sends a signal to a small electric motor bolted to the front differential. That motor moves a shift fork inside the diff to lock the front axles in (4WD) or let them spin free (2WD). A sensor inside the actuator tells the ATV which position it's in, and that's what turns your 4x4 light on or off.
It's a simple job, but the actuator sits low on the front diff, right where mud, water and creek crossings hit first.
Common reasons Honda Foreman 4WD stops working
- Water or mud inside the actuator. Once water gets past the seals, the motor and the position sensor corrode.
- Corroded plugs and wiring. The connector to the actuator lives in the splash zone. Green, crusty pins mean a bad connection.
- A worn-out motor or position sensor. Even a dry actuator wears out over time. When the sensor fails, the ATV can't confirm it's in 4WD.
- A bad 4WD switch or blown fuse. Less common, but worth ruling out before you buy parts.
Why is my Honda 4x4 light flashing?
A flashing 4x4 light means your Honda's computer found a problem in the 4WD system and is showing a blink code. The number of flashes points to the part it doesn't like, and it often turns out to be the shift motor or its wiring. Count the flashes and look the code up in your service manual before you replace anything.
If the code points to the shift motor, the motor or its sensor has usually been damaged by water. That's why so many riders replace it more than once.
How to tell if it's the actuator
- Check the fuse for the 4WD system first. It's the cheapest fix there is.
- Unplug the actuator connector on the front diff. Look for water, mud or green corrosion on the pins.
- Listen when you press the button. With the key on, you should hear the motor run for a second. No sound usually means no power, or a dead motor.
- Pull the actuator off the front diff and look inside. Water, mud or milky gear oil in the actuator is a sure sign it's done.
Your two options to fix it
1. Replace it with another electronic actuator
A new factory actuator brings back the stock button, but it costs hundreds of dollars, and it's the same design that just failed. If you ride in mud and water, there's a good chance you'll be doing this again.
2. Switch to a manual 4WD actuator
A manual actuator replaces the electric motor with a sealed mechanical one. A cable runs to a shifter on your bars or tank, and you pick the mode yourself. There's no motor, sensor or plug left to fail, so 4WD works every time.
How the Sure 4 manual actuator works on a Honda
The Knight ATV Sure 4 bolts on where your electronic actuator was. You shift with a lever, and it locks into 2WD, 4WD or Diff Lock. It's plug and play: no cutting, no drilling and no splicing wires, and every kit has an install video.
| Kit | Shifter | Dash 2WD/4WD lights | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sure 4 with Tank Lever | Tank Lever (turn the knob) | Won't show | $299.99 |
| Sure 4 Tank Lever Combo | Tank Lever | Keep working | $359.99 |
| Sure 4 with Side Shifter | Side Shifter (lever) | Won't show | $399.99 |

Frequently asked questions
Why won't my Honda Foreman go into 4WD?
The most common cause is a failed electronic 4WD actuator on the front differential, usually from water or mud getting inside. Check the 4WD fuse and the actuator plug first, then look inside the actuator for water.
Why is my Honda Foreman stuck in 4WD and won't go back to 2WD?
The same actuator controls both directions. If its motor or sensor fails while it's in 4WD, it can stay there. A manual actuator lets you shift back to 2WD by hand.
Will my 4x4 light still work with a manual actuator?
With the Tank Lever Combo or Ultimate Kit, yes, your dash keeps showing 2WD and 4WD. The base Tank Lever and Side Shifter kits don't light the 2WD/4WD indicator.
Can I still use Diff Lock?
Yes. Every Honda Sure 4 kit locks into 2WD, 4WD or Diff Lock right from the shifter.
Do I have to cut any wires?
No. The Sure 4 is plug and play, with no cutting, drilling or splicing.
